The Technician is responsible for conducting routine service on vehicles and for diagnosing and completing repairs on customer vehicles. The Technician is the most up-to-date person in the dealership with regard to the mechanical aspects of vehicles and works closely with the Parts Department and with the Service Coordinator. The Technician uses the computer to determine how long a given repair or service will take and keeps the Service Coordinator or manager abreast of repair progress so that additional work may be scheduled.
The Technician is a good communicator, immediately telling the Service Coordinator and Parts Department if a part needs to be ordered, and asking for clarification if a work order is not clear or seems incorrect. The Technician is capable of correctly performing complicated repair sequences according to established procedures. The Technician knows the shop area and the availability of special tools that might be needed. The Technician is detail-oriented and writes on the work order the repairs completed, the parts required, and the labor to be charged. In addition, the Technician documents any other problems with the vehicle that were noted during servicing. In large part, this person should be capable of working without close supervision, managing his/her own time and workflow.
Minimum qualifications for entry level technician would include high school diploma or the equivalent, and automotive technical schooling preferable. Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information. ASE certification preferred. General mechanical skills. Valid driver’s license and a driving record to meet dealership requirements. Manual dexterity. Good judgment.
